Some info: Your web site asked for advice on free LaTeX tools for Windows. Some years ago I was using emTeX quite a bit under Win95, and out of curiosity I reinstalled it today. It's pretty straightforward: a) download the complete emTeX install from your local CTAN site; you can browse the packages at http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/msdos/emtex or download the entire set as a single zipfile via ftp://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/msdos/emtex.zip (though there is probably a more mirror-friendly way to retrieve this via links on the HTTP pages) b) unzip emtex.zip c) read the introductory readme, quick and install documentation (ending in .ENG for english, .GER for german) d) following instructions, run install.exe and follow the prompts The install program creates a pretty complete LaTeX (2.09 and/or 2e) installation. There are a few environment variables you're directed to set, but little else should be required. (My installation was complicated a little by having a number of emTeX environment variables still hanging around from a long-deleted installation...) (Also, to be complete, I ended up doing a little more: - I downloaded and installed DVIWIN 2.9, which I'd used before to directly display DVI files - dvips 5.83 was included in the emTeX download, but for some reason wasn't installed, so I installed it separately (following its installation instructions) - under Win2K I had to add the RSX option -Re0 to avoid a warning message; I also added -RO to support long filenames under WinNT/2K; all this via another environment variable: set RSXOPT=-Re0 -RO
